In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt reached out personally to artist and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens for help in redesigning all of America’s currency. At this point in history, American coin designs in use dated back to 1895 or before, and President Roosevelt wanted all of the nation’s currency updated.

Saint-Gaudens accepted the president’s commission and created the depiction of Lady Liberty. In his design, Lady Liberty is featured in full-length figure as she strides confidently forward from the nation’s capital city of Washington DC. With her torch held aloft in her right hand as a guiding light and the olive branch of peace in her left, Lady Liberty’s body is outlined by the rays of the rising sun behind her.

This particular image of Lady Liberty was finalized in 1907 and featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933. Unfortunately, Saint-Gaudens died in 1907 from illness just months before the US Mint completed production of the coins for release into circulation.

On the obverse of these bars you’ll find Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty depiction, oriented vertically on the face of the bar. The reverse features engravings of the bar’s metal content, weight, and purity, along with the image of an eagle with wings outstretched in the middle.
