These bars have unique background elements on both sides of the bar that include crisscross patterns and a brilliant mirrored finish that is alternated on either side.

James Earle Fraser designed the imagery for the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. The administration of President William Howard Taft authorized Fraser’s work for the nickel design and paid him an initial fee of $2,500 for the work plus additional fees to cover expenses incurred while he completed the design.

The Buffalo Nickel brought uniquely American designs to the coin that you wouldn’t find on other sovereign currency. Its design was also reflective of Fraser’s life experiences growing up on the plains of the Midwest and Upper Midwest in America. The design would go down in history as one of the more unique from this era as it did not feature either Liberty or the bald eagle.

On the obverse of the 1 oz RMC Buffalo Silver Bar is Fraser’s right-profile portrait of a Native American tribal member. This figure’s facial features are the combination of various real-life indigenous leaders from the early 20^th century. The right-profile bust includes an engraving of “Liberty” above and the RMC mint mark below, and it is set on a background field through the center portion of the bar that is mirrored and clear. Above and below this field are crisscrossing lines in a pattern.

The reverse of the RMC Buffalo Silver Bar features Fraser’s depiction of an American bison. Better known as a buffalo, this massive land mammal was designed for the Buffalo Nickel by Fraser using a creature named Black Diamond at the Central Park Zoo as inspiration. The side of the bar uses the crisscross pattern as the background setting for the buffalo while the upper and lower portions of the bar have clear, mirrored fields with engravings of the weight, purity, and metal content.
