The use of the skull and crossbones has varied by time period and culture. The visual appearance of the skull and crossbones typically takes one of two forms. The most common is the use of a human skull with the two long bones crossing behind the skull near the jaw. An alternate option often employed the placement of the human skull above the two long bones which cross below the skull portion entirely.

It wasn’t until after the Late Middle Ages that the skull and crossbones came to have wider uses. Pirates and other military units would use the image on flags as a symbol of their ferocity in battle. By the 18^th and 19^th centuries, the image was popular on crucifixes or worn on rosaries as a sign of Christ’s victory over death.
