Hobo’s travel America’s expanding rail network during the 19th and early 20th centuries commonly passed the time etching their own engravings in US coinage.

American nickel coins were popular targets of hobo artists because they were readily available, like pennies, but had a larger surface area on which they could make their own alterations to popular circulation coin designs.

On the obverse of the 1 oz Antique Train Hobo Nickel Silver Round is the image of a steam engine as it powers down the rails, moving from left to right on the coin’s surface. Engravings of “Liberty” and a year of issue, “1913,” are included in the same relative position as the famous Buffalo Nickels from James Earle Fraser.

The reverse of the coin shows a hobo walking along with his knapsack over his shoulder and a pipe in his mouth. If you tip the coin so the hobo is horizontal rather than vertical, you’ll see that his knapsack vaguely resembles the buffalo’s hump from the Buffalo Nickel, and features engravings that read “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “Five Cents.”
