Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins debuted in 1979 as the second gold bullion coin after the South African Gold Krugerrand. The coins were initially available only in 1 oz gold and had a purity level of .999. In November 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint increased the gold content to .9999 purity levels and added 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins to the series.

The latest addition to the series were these 1 Gram Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins, which debuted in 2014. The 1 Gram Gold Maple Leaf has the same design elements as the other weights in the collection and features the same security elements as other coins in the series, with the exception of the maple leaf privy mark on the reverse.

On the obverse of 1 Gram Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty appears on the obverse of all Canadian coinage and this is the fourth-generation design used in Canada. It was designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt for the Royal Canadian Mint and is the first effigy of a monarch since the 1930s to depict a royal without the crown.

The reverse side of 1 Gram Gold Maple Leaf coins includes the sugar maple leaf. Designed in 1979 by Walter Ott for the first Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, this design beautifully captures the appearance of the national emblem.
