The Battle of the Coral Sea took place in the waters between Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. The goal of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s advancement was an invasion of Port Moresby. Though the battle is considered a tactical victory for the Japanese forces as they destroyed various Allied naval vessels, the Allies earned the strategic victory by preventing the invasion force.

Coral Sea took place from May 4 to May 8, 1942. This ¼ oz gold bullion coin was issued to commemorative the collaboration between American and Australian forces. The Allied task force consisted of two United States Navy carrier task forces and a joint Australian-American cruiser force.

On the obverse of the 2014 ¼ oz Battle of the Coral Sea Gold Coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted here in right-profile relief in a fourth-generation portrait created in 1998. This was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998 for the Royal Mint.

The reverse of all Australian Battle of the Coral Sea Gold Coins features the image of a World War II-era battleship as it sails forward at the viewer. In the background, the Southern Cross from the Australian flag is on the left and the Stars and Stripes of the American flag are on the right. Included are inscriptions marking the name of the battle and the dates of American-Australian collaboration throughout the war.
